Ford Motor Company has 2.3 billion or more reasons to be cheerful this morning, selling-off Jaguar and Rover to India’s Tata. [ India Times story here ] Ford bought Jaguar for $2.5 billion in 1989 and Land Rover for $2.7 billion in 2000. Tata must know something that Ford doesn’t about luxury market trends. This is the same emerging company that is about to release a $2,500 automobile, right? Here’s the deal as I see it: “Buy a a Jaguar and get a Tata. And free floor mats,” along with a bumper sticker for the Jag what reads, “My other car is a Tata.”
